    Would you keep her?
I have this 09 female mojave that was eating rats like candy from the day i got her(several months). Then she went on a 2 month break refusing to eat rats.So i tried feeding her a couple large mice.Well she scarfed them down and wanted more.Well i hate the smell of mice and i am thinking about selling her because of it.So i wondered what would you folks do if this was your female? Now one more thing i got her in the hopes of producing BEL next season(i have a male mojo also) but the mouse stink might change this idea :P.So vote what you would do.Oh here is a pic of her. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dothers002.jpg

Starve her for a month or two. Has decent body size on her and just ignore her for a while and should come around.

Thats pretty much what i did during her 2 month break.I tried feeding her ever other week up until i tried the mice.I even scented a rat pup with mouse smell and she freaked out .Now she is around the 500g weight and has been the whole time on her break.

If shell eat mice, then feed her mice or rats scented with mice.

Mouse eaters can get just as big as rat eaters.

The problem with mice is they STINK :fart: .I would rather have a thousand rats in the house then 3 mice :P.So they are costing me $2 a mouse and thats crazy in my book :rolleye2:

I mean if you want to keep her, just keep her on rats. If she is healthy she is not going to starve herself. Eventually she will eat. Assuming that everything else is ok, "aka happy snake".

I have a pinstripe female that was a total pain in the butt to keep feeding and she was a hatchling so it was even more nerve racking. It took almost 2 months and her going down to 40 grams to get eating. Now she is an eating machine and I hope it stays that way. I would keep her, I think she looks great, but at the sametime I could see why you would want to sell her

Ignore my vote... if shes and 09 and only 500 grams I would sell her. I hate mice and I do have a few mousers. One is an 07 and just now hitting breeding weight. You might be better off selling her and getting an 2010 that is well started on rats. Plus when an adult eats mice you need to feed 5 at a clip and that can take quite a while. Just my :twocents:

I see my bp's change there menu often, so if you choose to get rid of her you can't get a bp anymore because thats what bp's do ;)

I have them changing from rat to mice to hamster to rat again, they just like a change of menu now and than.

I have ran into that with a few of my females. They will eventually switch back to rats. I had a female refuse a rat for 3 months. I threw 1 ASF in there and she grabbed it in about 3 seconds. The very next week I put a rat in. She has not refused a rat since.

I have a normal female that got to .1000 grams on rats, got bit by one, and. Now only feeds on mice. The switch was 6months ago.

She now weighs 2100 grams and is gravid. She eats 6 once a week and never refuses the easy meal.
Its a good decision to keep the mojo, shes worth the outcome

Balls are always problem feeders. Well not all. But a good amount

my names ernie, one day, you'll be checking out my availabilty page for great morphs at better prices.

I would keep her. If you want to breed her, you already have a head start. Sometimes when females get to the 500 gr mark they go off food for a while. I wouldn't worry to much. Try frozen thawed, if she prefers mice. or try feeding her every two or three weeks untill she comes around.
    Good luck!

Well i am not exact on her hatch date so she could be late 09.The guy i got her from had low cash income so she had a slow start in life when it came to being fed :(.So when i got her i was VERY happy when she killed a rat the first attempt. Then she continued to gobbled them down until one day she went stupid and refused to eat for 2 months .So thats her whole story up until now

I have a few that need a mouse or two to get started feeding again after their hunger strikes. I let them have mice for a few feedings, then on the next feeding follow a mouse with a rat pup that has crawled around in mouse shavings when their feeding response is still high from the mouse. It's worked with a few of mine.

She's a gorgeous mojo. I'd keep her and try to work with her so you can have your BELs one day. Good luck!

She looks good and already has more than a year's age on her. She may not be the biggest 2009 out there, but too many people disregard age in favor of size. I'd much rather breed a 1500 gram 2.5 year old than a 2000 gram 1.5 year old.

If she's eating something, keep her. Work on getting her on rats. Try to feed F/T mice to keep the smell down.

Joe i ve had the same problem with my albino het pied female. She would lunge for f\t rats no sooner than her tub was opened. Then she went on a break. Tried live small rat,f\t small rat, no dice. Live mice she would eat 2-3 a week. Tried switching her back no luck. I stopped trying to feed her for just over a month laid a frozen thawed small rat next to her hide and left it. Woke up checked her tub it was gone. She by far has been the pickiest eater i have ever dealt with. Going to give it another shot on sunday and see if she takes it.

if everything else that's been posted fails, and you want to keep her, feed her mice. when she gives you a clutch of eggs and lost almost 1/3 of her body weight. that's the time I switch my stubborn ones. they will usually eat anything.

I do not breed snakes or anything like that but that girl is definitley a keeper! She is gorgeous! I had two ball pythons once that would not eat anything but mice. I just ended up feeding mutliple mice and then they eventually switched back to small rats so don't give up hope on her just yet!

I can't stand to keep any nasty fur rat thing in my house, mouse or rat. But I love my pythons.. My boy Zeus will ONLY eat live mice, he would starve for a year if I offered rats.... So every week I head out to the feed store and pay $1.75 for a mouse ! Now a cat or dog would blow through 10-50lbs of food a month, that's like $10-$40 bucks a month easy.. If a snake is eating once a week that's $8 bucks a month !

I would never give up my Zeus just cuz he is a picky eater... try frozen in bulk if it's that bad, but she is a nice female I would hang on to her !

She might make a complete turn around though it might take time so it's up to you to see if you wish to keep her or not.

Back in 04 I purchased a female het albino (the most stubborn feeder I ever had) no matter what I would do she would not touch a rat (no way to fool her either)

She went on strike for 9 months when she hit 1000 grams, I thought now way she would refuse a rat after that…well I was wrong still no way to fool her.

Last year she went of feed again for 6 months this time and while I though it would not work few month ago (in august) I offered her a rat and she ate that rat without hesitation and even wanted some more.

She now feed VERY aggressively on rats and doubt I will ever have a problem with her again. ;)

So yeah even the most stubborn can switch back, now the question is, do you have the patience?

You shouldn't purchase a female in hope to breed her in that short of time frame anyway, so this shouldn't even be about that. It's not even healthy, young and obese snakes make slugs. As for the mice, get F/T or try weanlings, or continue to starve. Buy yourself a male mystic and make yourself some mystic potions. BEL's are so yesterday, it's going to be comic how many there will be in 2 years. They will look like today's bumblebee market.

I wasn't trying to sound like that, I'm saying if you purchase an 09 female, she should be ready for '12 breeding. That's all I was saying. Where is that 2012 breeding coming from. I have 09 almost on the verge of ovulation already. Ive had some lay as young as 17 months old. They dont ALL mature at 1500g and 3 years old. Even the largest female can become eggbound. Bigger doesnt mean better when it comes to breeding.

Rich, '12 comes from the previous conversation I was having with the OP... He purchased a '09 mojave and was contemplating selling her because she wouldn't be ready next season which would be her second because of feeding issues. I said purchase a female knowing it typically takes 3 years. Rarely is a female ready at 17 months, just because she isn't means you sell her?? Why is this so complicated??
