Leopard geckos are great pets for kids. My kids (9 1/2 and 7) really enjoy handling the geckos and helping me take care of them.

Here's a link to my care sheet.

What about blue-tongued skinks? They're a slightly larger and heftier (i.e. "durable") lizard for a 9 yr old to handle compared to a small gecko, and they're a lot more forgiving as far as care/diet/housing compared to beardies, uros and CWDs.

Aside from the intitial cost of the animal itself, I still think they're the greatest starter lizards for kids.

I recommend a mali uromastix. They are very docile and pretty easy to care for. They are also a lot slower than the other lizards mentioned as babies which would enable your 9yr old cousin to hold it without it running off every chance it got.
Blue Tongue skinks are also great pets.

Well he ended up getting a Leopard Gecko (A sweet little Patternless he got for free) and he's babysitting some Tokay's for my uncle as well. Thank you guys for your suggestions! :)
