    Re: Caramel

I know the guy I bought her from and he has more than a few that he had been working with for a while. I've seen most of his clutches and he's had a lot of success with them. He's bred the male hets back to the females and swears he does nothing out of the ordinary. I don't know if its a line specific thing or not, but it appears the line he had worked with hasn't had any major issues. Only one to really find out I guess. I'm well aware of the possible defects and all I can do is hope to avoid any problems. I love caramels, so its worth the risk to me.

    Re: Caramel

So I have one other question regarding this. Hopefully there is either someone that has completed this or knows someone that has. I have not worked with pieds yet, but as far as I've read there doesn't seem to be any issues breeding two visuals. Caramels have much better success being bred to hets. So if I'm lucky enough to hit on two caramel pieds, has anyone had any issues breeding two visual caramel pieds to each other? Should I plan on breeding the visuals to the caramel hets or pied hets?

I've not heard of any issues breeding female homozygous pieds but unfortunately had to sell all the females I hatched last year so I'm no where near confirming with a pied X pied clutch of my own. However, I believe the original Peter Kalh clutch to prove pied genetic was homozygous pied X homozygous pied.

If you get a chance ask your friend who has produced good clutches from caramel females (am I understanding right?) what the rodents they eat are fed (i.e. what brand and formulation of rodent food etc.). I had a theory once that might be behind why some breeders have kinks and others don't with caramels. There where some exceptions so probably not the factor but just curious.
