Re: Is it possible/legal to have a crow as a pet?

I'm not interested in messing with state laws regarding wildlife. They are in place for a reason.

Connie - wow, it's actually a piebald crow! Who knew. That's really neat and thanks for sharing.

I considered corvids a long time ago. They are very smart animals but it's one of those things where keeping native wild animals is illegal in most states. I think you can get away from it if you don't live in a large city or disturbs neighbors.

I live within the city limits of Fort Worth yet I wake up to the sounds of cows and horses so I mean, it depends how mellow it is where you live.

The only wild US birds you can generally keep as pets without permits here are European starlings and English house sparrows. Starlings are cool little birds, with their beautiful "stars" and their talking ability. Do a search on youtube for Weewoo the starling to see a talented little guy.

Corvids are wonderful birds, I'd love to have one someday.

I had a young crow once. It was fine until it was late at night, then it started shrieking like its rear end was on fire, so I brought it back to the park I had found it in.

I know in Ohio you can't have them But if we could, I would love to have one. I have a friend who has rehabbed them in the past- very intelligent creatures.

Re: Is it possible/legal to have a crow as a pet?

My husband's family had a crow when he was a boy. It was one that they found as a baby in a local park. No one (cops included; his dad was a cop!) seemed to bat an eye at this.. but this was the 1980s. Nowadays it seems like neighbors are backbiting all of the time.. I would avoid it illegally.. Because, once they get their foot in your door, seeing you owning something illicit, they might try to take your other animals as well. I would check your local laws and abide by them (advice from a "responsible adult".)
Crows are one of the awesomest birds. Maybe a local rescue or preserve has openings for helping-out in animal rehabilitation? I wish I had time personally, as there is a plaec right down the road from me that does this.. too bad I work so much
