MITES!! Freaking out! What do I do??

    Hi guys

My little girl from Petsmart has apparently brought mites in. I found a crapload of little black dots in her water and she had been soaking in her dish a lot yesterday. I thought she was just chilling but apparently she was trying to find some relief!! Checked my male's tub afterwards and he apparently has them, too. I don't use any real sub, just newspapers...

I have no idea what to do. I wanted to post to get a quick answer on the process to fight the mites...

I've heard about prevent a mite and reptile relief. Are those the two things I need?? I want to order these things ASAP to get this taken care of.

What is the process I need to follow for this?? I feel so bad for my babies I checked her over at the store but didn't see any on her then... Gah.

Re: MITES!! Freaking out! What do I do??

Natural Chemistry Reptile Spray (you can find it at Petco) is the way to go if you want quick relief for your BP. You can apply it straight on your BP as well as spray the whole enclosure. I'd also pick up Prevent-a-Mite (PAM) and spray your whole terrarium as a second line of defence.

Make sure you follow directions on PAM and make sure that after you treat the enclosure you wait at least an hour for the PAM to fully dissipate before putting the BP back in.

I just had mites and I used both treatments every two weeks for a month and no more mites. Good luck!

Do you spray the PAM on the plastic tub? I've been searching while waiting for responses and I've seen not to do that? To just spray the bedding?

I've been told on a facebook group for reptiles to use Nix... which is a lice treatment and really dilute it. I don't know if I feel comfortable with that. Harsh chemicals really kind of freak me out...

Ordering the reptile spray right now!

EDIT - The spray won't get here from Amazon until the 10th of April. That's the fastest shipping I can choose. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime?

Re: MITES!! Freaking out! What do I do??

I'm battling them right now too. Altho I'm doing things a lot differently from what most people do. I had great success with my method today. Sasha is no longer soaking in her bowl after I moves her from.her old cage. What I did was as soon as I figured I had mites I went out and bought some betadine and soaked her until she wanted out. Which was around 2 hours of soaking. Half of the mites came off her with just that one soak. It only cost me 15 dollars and time. I'm doing another thing completely with my tank as it had 2 layers of substrate but I won my first battle. But the war is still going on

Yes, you do need substrate in the tub for PAM to be effective.

With Reptile Spray, it's pretty easy. You spray it on the snake (as long as it's not on the face) and then you just spray the whole enclosure with it.

If it was me, I wouldn't mess with Nix but that's just me.

The reason they scare me is because I'm afraid of doing it wrong and harming my snakes lol. It's not that I don't trust the product, I don't trust myself!

I've ordered the reptile spray. Hopefully they can hang on until the 10th.

Re: MITES!! Freaking out! What do I do??

From my personal experience, mineral oil bath worked because it suffocates the mites but your BP's scales are going to start falling off (not as scary as it sounds). I used one small cap of mineral oil to a gallon of water. After the next shed your BP's scales will be back to normal.

This is what I used. It was a few bucks:

Re: MITES!! Freaking out! What do I do??

I know the feeling I just finished up on my First Mite out break, I followed the care sheet on this forum and Im happy to report I won it was very Labor Intensive because I did the house along with the Snake Rooms. Go to Reptile basics and buy the gallon size Reptile Spray it will save you some Money, I ended up cleaning the walls and floors and every nook I could find a little over board probably. With 7 Snakes I could see this being really expensive so I took no chances. ON the PAM follow the directions to the T.

My opinion is yes, that's all you need.

If I was you, I would get an extra bottle of Reptile Spray to have around. I would also get a can of Provent-A-Mite to keep on hand.

They both work well, they're both safe, and with those two products on hand, you be able to handle any future mite issues quickly and relatively easily.
It is okay to use pine bedding for snakes.
It is okay to feed live food to snakes.

Alright, both products are coming to me! I hope they get here soon.

Can I give them some type of bath to get some relief? I don't feel comfortable with mineral oil and scales falling off. I know with fleas, a tiny bit of dish soap kills them. Is that harmful for snakes?
