Re: When feeders become pets
I started with 3 rat pups who were going to be raised and used as breeders.
My other breeder female had 2 litters; one of 3 (kept 2 girls) and a litter of 11 (kept 2 girls). Now I have 7 rats that are pets and I'm not breeding feeders anymore because I kept keeping them.
Here's 4 of them:

Re: When feeders become pets
A friend of mine gave me a pet rat that's about 8 months old. She is completely hand tame and has not bit yet.
I couldn't see taking and animal that was raised as a pet with a great disposition, and feed it off. It just felt wrong. So she is staying as a pet rat for my son.
Now the other 200 rats... They can bite, and frequently try to escape. For those rats, they can be food.. All day.

What have we here today...
I bought this medium rat as a larger meal for Vigil, because I believe she is a bit underweight from the weaned rats. This little girl was unexpectedly quiet on the ride back home, so it piqued my interest... I looked into the bag, she was just quiet and cute, reached in to pet her and she is calm as a calm rat can be...
I guess I have a pet rat now. I promise I won't do this again. Her name is LUCKY BREAK... short is Lucky. She would have been food a few hours ago, but her previously inevitable fate as a feeder rat has just changed forever.

Reading this thread has made it realllly hard for me to keep feeding Nagini lol.
The problem is though that rats were my thing with my ex. We had a pair named Templeton (mine) and Splinter (his). We subsequently broke up because he couldn't keep his hands off other rats. I don't think I'll be able to have a pet rat for awhile because of the association.

I also had this association, because one of my previously supposed good friend (who ended up being a complete ****) had a bunch of pet rats. I almost took pleasure in feeding F/T rats to my snakes because of this association.
Somehow, this little Lucky rat took to my tender side rather than make that association with the bad friend, in my head...
