Help with an ID, please :)

What would everyone say this is? I unexpectedly came into possession of this gorgeous little thing tonight. I'm thinking it's a Dumerils? Also, sex? I've read you can sex boas by their tails? If that's the case, I'm going to say female?

    Thought so.
I wouldn't normally take on a snake with the potential to get as big as a Dum but everything I've read says they grow pretty slowly, so I'll have time to set up a proper enclosure for an adult. I did pop it and I'm fairly certain it's a female. I also don't see spurs. Whatever the gender, I love how docile it is!

Yes, it's a Dumerils. No, you can't tell sex just by looking at the tail. Very nice snake though! And Dums are known for their docile nature. They can get fairly large, but they are good beginner boas so you shouldn't have any issues with her (if she proves to be female). Enjoy her and congrats!

Sexing the snake is very simple. There is no probing or popping. Just turn the snake over and look near the tail area. If it is a male there are some large anal spurs and if not the snake is a female. Hope that helps

This is actually a myth. Both males and females can develop large spurs.

I prefer to research more than one source

From what I know, boa males tend to have bigger spurs, but it is not a guarantee. If you really want a properly sexed animal, popping and probing are by far the most accurate when done correctly. I'm not saying I know everything about dumerils boas as I've never had one, but it is the general rule is not to trust spurs alone for most species.

    Anyways, very pretty dumeril OP!

Yeah. I know how to pop relatively well. I did it once on "her" and I'm fairly certain I got it right. I just didn't wanna bug her too much. She's only about 300g so it wasn't too difficult but she was squirmy.

The most unbelievable thing happened when I got her home last night. I had her in my hands as I was getting her QT set up and she was pushing against my hand and arm so hard. I was concerned something was wrong with her. Then I looked at her nose and thought something was wrong.

    Turns out......

She shed entirely in my hands with a little help from me. It was the coolest thing ever. I hadn't even put her in her tub yet.
