It does defeat the purpose for a species such as a ball python, they are secretive and feel safe by hiding and in this case they would not really be hiding anymore.
Ball pythons spend the majority of their time hiding (which is why they make a poor display snake), if/when people want to see them, they just need to take them out.

Thanks Deborah - That leads to a follow-up question then; I've read that you should not disturb them when in their hides. But if they're in there most of the time... You never get to hold them?

As long as your snake is feeding properly, you can disturb them as much or as little as you want (in my opinion). Once my BP skip a meal, they no longer get handled again until after they eat.
Eating = ok to handle
NOT eating = Leave them alone
