    1st attempt at breeding Rats

So I have read hundreds of articles and DIY on breeding rats. I am fortunate enough to have a friend who breeds. He had excess so he loaned me two "transport racks" and 31 assorted rats. I am building a rack on friday and will have them set up and ready to go in a 20x27 tubs on a 1:4 ratio.

My question is I am trying to determine if I should just breed these for a little while and get the hang of it or let these grow to max size for my Large Redtail and get ASF to breed instead.

Where local in Socal can I source some breeder ASFs?

    Thanks

Asf are illegal in a few states and CA is one of them.

Breeding a bit of everything is always a good idea.

I'd stick with rats anyway, asf won't get as big if you're needing larger prey for your red tail.

Hows your rat breeding turning out? Have you got your tubs and planning figured out yet? Mine are confusing me at best. I'm actually going to post a new thread after this to hopefully clear up some questions I have. Starting with as many rats as you are is crazy talk! I have 5 females and 1 male but I am thinking I need to increase this 100 fold. I am putting very serious thought into moving my bedroom down to the sofa area and converting my entire bedroom into a rodent breeding facility. I've been buying from petco so 8 bucks a rat 1 rat a week per snake about 30 snakes now and growing... Ugh. Anyway hope your breeding is plentiful or at least started.

I had a litter of 5 and are now walkers. Had a litter of 11 drop the other day. Every few days I seem to have some drop. I built a rack so I have 5 of 6 tubs fille 1:4 and then if I have overflow I have 3-40 tanks 1-20 tank and 1-10 tank to use in the meantime.

So I had a litter of 5 and 11. Gave them food and water last night and lets add 9+ to the count. Let her finish her business in privacy but I counted 9 before I left...
