Hognose going off feed
Hey guys, I got a western hognose on 2/2 from Baltimore Repticon. I was able to feed her on 2/4 a small pinky and had no problem. I have tried to feed her twice since then but she has refused both times. For one of the pinkies I rubbed it against the frozen salmon to scent it but that did nothing. I know they tend to go off feed but I'm still worried since she is about 6 weeks old and only around 8 grams.
Heating is fine with a temp around 91 on the hot side.
Anything else I could try?
Thanks

Re: Hognose going off feed
Try feeding scenting it with a toad, I know that has worked for a lot of hognose keepers. Although I know that may not be available to you. Are you feeding live or f/t? Braining a f/t pinky may help a finicky eater. Hog noses tend to go off feed in the winter and early spring, but I definitely understand your concern especially since its a younger snake

Are you leaving the pinky in the enclosure overnight?
When I first got my Hognose, he went off feed after the first feeding for about a month. I found that if I just left the pinky in the enclosure overnight, it was gone by morning.

feeding F/T and yeah I was told to brain the pinky so I will plan on doing that. I have left the pinky in overnight but still nothing. Was going to let her calm down for a few days then try again. Thanks I will update you after I attempt again.

Brained a F/T yesterday but snake didn't eat. left it in overnight. I got a live pinkie and put that in the a container with her. She still isn't paying it any attention. I have a feeling I'm going to lose her. She just doesn't seem interested in anything I give her.

Re: Hognose going off feed
I was going to say check temps first but, you've already done that.
If it has settled in and is relatively undisturbed most of the time I'd make a call to the breeder and ask what they were feeding it.

I am curious how do you house her, cage size, substrate etc.
The problem with scenting is that you take two steps backward.
If the animal was feeding on mice without being scented and was a good feeder you really don't want to go backward and scent again.
Do you know are well established she was before the breeder let her go.
Hoggies are sometime sold when not consistent feeder or still feeding on scented which is an issue with people who have little experience.

Re: Hognose going off feed
Try scenting using canned salmon, I know that method is very effective. Or you could try scenting using frog legs from the fish market. It's better to scent to assure it eats, these things are usually easy to get a hold of if needed again. They could be even reused too. It's usually easy to gradually ween them off scented food anyways

If you have a headlamp put it over the heat for a few minutes too. Don't make it too hot though. Exactly how long has it been since it last ate?
