I think I read somewhere they don't do well unless they have a diet consisting entirely of ants. This would be a major deterrent to most prospective keepers. I think 99% of the horny toads in the pet trade are wild caught(I've never heard of anybody breeding them for resale) and I'd venture a guess that VERY few of them survive long.
they will die they need red ants that are high in folic acid. dont get me wrong cool lizard! but they are right protected, probally some species endangered. and always die! just get a bearded dragon
They don't ALL die... you just have to have a source for ants to feed them and care for them correctly. Getting the ants to feed them is the major obstacle and a real pain in the rear even if you have the 3-4 decent sources of ants.
Not many people want to bother with all that since things like bearded dragons eat easy to get prey items and have much simpler care, while looking "similar"(to a layperson).
We used to have massive amounts of horny toads/lizards where my family lives in Mayport/Jacksonville Florida. They are exceedingly rare now though. That's over about 3 decades, that they went from everywhere to nowhere. Sad, because they are really neat little critters.

That is something that happens globally every day. Humans determine something to be a nusiance to us, so it gets eliminated, and it sends a ripple all the way up the food chain...
Or humans want to aquire said animals or parts ie ivory and your anmials go extinct or endangered. stupid culture that believe tigers penis will correct e.d. ect. This sickens me and you can find it with every type of animal group on the planet.
Underground reptiles had them for a while, captive bred and everything. I think there is a supplement powder you can put on crickets that gives them what they would get from the ants.
