They do not! They prefer the dark. Bright lights stress them out.

I've searched and searched, but there simply has not been enough scientific research to prove either. From what I've gathered they do not, as they are nocturnal creatures and "in the wild" they burrow in the ground during the day and are only active at night (same as in captivity, they hide during the day and come out at night). I don't think UVB light can harm them, however being nocturnal lights of any kind can be more stressful than helpful. Hope this helps!

Are lights really stressful to them? I had not had lights in my cages for a while and my ball had stopped eating, I just put lights back in my cages and my ball stopped his hunger strike as soon as he had a light cycle again... Or could it just be coincidence?

To reiterate others, no it's not needed.

Hoever, you can have a "show" light on during the day just so you can see the inside of the tank. As long as the light isn't running all the time (i.e. they get turned out at night) it will be fine.

As with most things, it all depends on the snake. In general, lights are stressful because they are nocturnal and in most cases it can cause stressed behavior (off feed, roaming, etc). But, some tolerate things better than others. I have some that it probably wouldn't effect like yours', but I have some that would all out boycott food if I put a light in their enclosures. It's more of a general thing, not a fact as it doesn't apply to all.

    Do they need it? No
Can they benefit from it? Yes

UVB lighting or injections from a vet of d3 can stimulate feeding responses. The vet our Herp society uses has used this to get stubborn or starved rescues eating.
Lights work slower and can stress bp's so injections are preferred.

Mine have a light cycle. I have a reptile room and I use heavy curtains. They still get a natural light cycle although it never gets very bright in the room. When I say bright lights, I mean display brightness bulbs right on the snakes.
