    Favorite substrate?

I've been using Sanichips and I like it but I have trouble finding it in bulk. What's your favorite BP substrate? Bonus points for shopping links. Thanks!

I recently switched to shredded/shaved aspen, the quality of this stuff was excelent (no dust or tiny pieces). I also ordered 2 units to score free shipping

    Depends HEAVILY on the situation.

For my tubs the snakes could be in there on nothing and the humidity and temperatures would be right. So I like packing paper (unprinted news paper) or aspen. These tend to be dry substrates, difficult to maintaun humidity with.

For my lizards I give them a mix of sand, eco earth and dirt. Also could be using moss in the mix, but I didn't have any on hand so I didn't bother. Never changed their substrate.

For my rats I like to use eco earth.

I've been using harlan teklad aspen for my bp's and dumeril's, which is nice but dusty... It doesn't smell, doesn't stick, is softer and "clean", and absorbs any liquids well. Humidity in my house is around 60~65% now, so aspen is fine for these guys.

My GTP and scrub have eco earth coco fiber, since it's good for retaining humidity... these species need higher humidity, 70~85% range. But it sticks to EVERYTHING and I honestly hate it LOL.

I just bought coco chips and sphagnum moss from reptilebasics to mix with the coco fiber, or split the enclosures in half with the two substrates. Maybe stick the moss in another section in the corner, just to mix it up a little. Just trying to make things more interesting for my scrub python, mainly.

I've recently switched from basic paper towel to aspen bedding from the local tractor supply store. Cost me $13 for a huge bag (don't remember the actual weight at the moment) but I've loved it. My big BP's, especially Emrys, kept having trouble with tipping their water bowl over and flooding the tub floor on the paper towel, but now when they tip it I just have to scoop out the wet aspen and it's so much easier to deal with. I don't have a humidity problem since I have them in racks, and my "reptile room" is a walk-in closet, so the small space holds a good temp and humidity.

    Re: Favorite substrate?

Orchid bark / ReptiBark everytime for me .

Looks great and natural , makes the snakes look fabulous as long as they're not dark coloured like MBK or Cinnamon Royals or something ...

I can't abide Aspen !!! It washes the colours / colors out of most snakes - why anyone would have an albino or a snow corn on aspen is beyond me

Aspen also gets all over the house and carpets and drives the wife bonkers .

The one that work depending on the animal, time of the year, activity (breeding or not), can be anything from Coco Coir Chips to newspaper.

    Re: Favorite substrate?

I personally been using coconut husk for years and it had worked great for me. It holds humidity really well and you can buy a large brick relatively cheap. The only problem is, spot cleaning poop can be a little tricky due to the color.
