what do you think about natural habitats and live plants? i know they can harbor bacteria and bugs and what not but they look good and serve a purpose if they are kept up and cleaned, they supposedly reduce a snake stress level....would like opinions

If you are willing to put the time in and provide UV light they can be very nice. Just be sure that the plants that you use don't have fertilizer on them.

To add make sure you use live plants that can withstand your bp crawling on them. I like bonsai trees cause they are sturdy.

Naturalistic style cages are awesome ways to set up animals; however, for a ball python, as previous posters have mentioned you'll need some very sturdy plants.
Sansevieria plants work well, and you can also utilize the ZooMed brand naturalistic decor for plants such as grass tufts (which look real) to accent the cage. Live spanish moss can be draped over pieces of cork as well as caves to help create that natural look.

Do you mean a bio-active system or just some plants? bio active substrate uses 'good' bacteria to keep the system clean. Uranates are usually stirred in but solids picked up. It isn't easy to set up but once done it is the lowest maintenance of all systems. The guys I know whom have this type only change substrate partially and at that only once ever 1-2 years. they mostly just trim plants.

Alright good info thanks, I have a couple of ferns and vines, looks awesome and bp seems to love the set up, spends alot of his time in the fern itself....im curently using a coconut extract substrate seems to work very well with odor and really just the overall health of the snake and enclosure.
