    Closet incubator
    Hi,

Does anyone know what the best and SAFEST way to heat a closet incubator would be? The closet is approximately 8'X3' and is about 20" deep. It is not going to be insulated well as it will be in an 80+ degree room (the closet is not on an exterior wall either) but I will use styro egg boxes. I find it hard to believe that heat tape will work well but am afraid even a compact oil filled heater will be unsafe. I also feel that using heat lamps may be too unsafe but maybe I am just being paranoid. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

I think there will be risks whatever you choose... I guess my best advice would be to make sure and use a reliable thermostat to control whichever heating element you decide. Hopefully someone with more experience in this area will offer some suggestions.

We have a small incubating room heated with a sealed oil radiant heater run through a series of TWO thermostats for safety. 16 ball clutches so far this season and working perfectly....

Do those cool down fast? I am worried that it would still emit some heat after the thermostat told it to shut off causing the closet to overheat.

    Thanks,

I also use an oil filled radiant heater and I have found that they are fairly stable in the way they emmit heat. One thing that Brad mentioned that is very important is to have TWO thermostats. The helix is a great thermostat but you still have to have a back-up. Also make sure your thermostat can properley handle the wattage of the heater. I personally have a double Ranco set-up and it worked great last year and so far so good this year.

I think I will try the sealed oil filled radiator with TWO thermostats. Thanks for the input.
