Long-term effects of being cold

Do our wonderful BP's have any long-term effects of being cold? In late January, KY had a severe ice storm and my power was out for three days. The temperature inside my apartment was a little below 40 degrees for that time period. When the power finally came back on, I got david out of his cage only to find him limp and non-responsive. I turned on a portable heater until he felt warm and curled up in my hands "ball" style. Since then he has shed a couple of times and I haven't had any trouble with him eating.

Other than being frozen to death, the cold long term is just like you and me being in freezing temps. More likely to contract illnesses, sluggishness, no interest in food...

Just compare it to you being in 20 degree weather.

Its not fun, its not something you want to be in, but if you have to, you can.

Just don't let it happen again.

Always have a backup plan for your animals. They depend on you.

I am from Kentucky as well and had the same problem with the leos. I had some instant hand warmers that I used to replace the UTH and swapped em out every four hours or so. I know keep a nice box of them just in case.

Haven't had any trouble with the leos since so I assumed no long term damage occurred as well.

I live in MA for the time being, and we had a real nasty ice storm this winter. Lost power for 11 days - fortunately I hadn't come home from school yet with the bp.

What are some people's plans to keep conditions ok if the power goes out? The hand warmer idea was very cool. Just wondering if anyone has any other tricks up their sleeves.

A battery backup system for computers would be good in your case. Battery run time up is to 60 minutes however most of these heat pads are only ~8 watts so you can have them running for weeks on this.

I got off easy this last winter: Just over 18 hours without power.

My backup includes several sheets of styrofoam that I place on top and wedge behind the enclosures and several rolls of backer rod to jam underneath the enclosures and into every corner that I can access.

Portable power includes the already named backup power unit for my computer and a couple battery jump starters with work light fixtures that hold heat lamps.

When that isn't enough I go into lazy mode and light up the triple infrared pads on the propane bottle. The pads are cheap and since they mount directly to the propane bottle the whole heating unit is totally portable and can be placed anywhere it's needed.

Just a little input, what I do is I always keep the heating packs from wal-mart near-by ever since I had a simular situation, though it was nearly not as cold in my house.

Oh, you Californians. If it reached 20 degrees here in February, we would declare it a heat wave and take off our coats.

I can't relate- we ran our air conditioner half or more of the winter!
