As I mentioned in an earlier post, I will be getting a juvenile male Dumerils in about a month and yesterday I ordered a T10 cage from Animal Plastics to house him. Ali at Animal Plastics was extremely helpful and seemed knowledgeable about the housing needs of all types of snakes, including Dums. I was surprised when she advised me to order the T10 built WITHOUT Flexwatt for belly heat. She said I should instead get a radiant heat panel. At her suggestion, I called Bob at Pro-Products and ordered their model PH3 heat panel. They are going to ship the panel to Animal Plastics & they will install it in my cage when it is built. Both Ali and Bob explained that the heat panel would be mounted in the top of one end of the cage and, controlled with a thermostat, would make a "hot" spot directly under the panel of whatever temp I wanted while keeping the ambient temp of the cage a little cooler. Bob said that even in the winter when the room temperature dropped into the 60s I would easily be able to keep the ambient temp in the 80s. Do those of you with Dumerils agree that belly heat is not needed? Does the set up I described sound OK? I can easily call Animal Plastics and have them add Flexwatt for a small additional charge.

I presently have two BPs (one adult normal and one yearling BEL) and an adult corn snake. I want to add a boa to my collection.....I owned a red tail years ago that grew to be too big & I had to find her a new home......After several weeks of careful research I have decided a male Dumerils would best meet my criteria of good temperament, moderate adult size and generally easy husbandry requirements. I've been looking on kingsnake.com and other sites and have found a number of male Dumerils for sale. The past couple of days I have been communicating with a very nice guy named James at Prehistoric Pets in California. They presently have several Dumerils hatchlings available as well as one male juvenile (about 18 mos old and 550 grams weight) and a young adult male (exact age unknown) described as being about 6 feet long and 2150 grams. I've seen photographs of both and they look good. The younger one is lighter in color and better looking, but that isn't important to me as I am only looking for a pet. I think I would prefer to not get a baby, so I'm now trying to decide between the juvenile and the adult. Maybe. James assures me that both are tame and in good health, although he did say the larger one was a "little jumpy" but had never attempted to bite anyone. Prices are reasonable and I've checked out Prehistoric Pets on the BOI. Generally positive reviews. I feel comfortable dealing with them. My biggest concern is that all the Dumerils at Prehistoric Pets are being fed live prey and always have been. I absolutely DO NOT want to feed live food to any of my snakes. Not now, not ever. Period. That's a big deal to me. I explained this to James and he said he was "positive" I wouldn't have any difficulty transitioning one of their Dumerils from live to f/t because they have strong feeding responses. What do you think? I did switch my corn from live to f/t when I got him and it was easy. Then again, my corn snake will eat just about anything you put in front of him. I have no experience with Dumerils and have read that they can be more finicky eaters than other boas. Should I accept James' assurance that I'll easily be able to switch one of their snakes to f/t? Also, I want to have the enclosure well regulated before I get the snake, regardless of what I end of getting. I was about to order a model 422D from Boaphile (size 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, 17" high) but now I'm concerned that would be too big if I got the juvenile. Opinion? I am very aware that a too large enclosure can cause severe stress for a BP...but what about a Dumerils? I would prefer to simply house the snake in his "forever" cage from the get go.......but perhaps that is a bad idea? If you think the 422D is too big for the juvenile now, what size would you suggest for a temporary enclosure. Last question: Does anyone think I would be better off getting the adult? Size sounds OK and the price is the same. I hope to make my decision this week and would value the advice of those of you who are experienced with Dumerils. Thanks!

My dads awesome and has helped me completely revamp the cage as I'm useless at handiwork.

The guy had heat bulbs inside covered in hardware mesh run on timers :o

Was not okay with that. Ripped it all out. Bought a huge RHP and mounted to the top. Cut a whole in the bottom of the wood, laid plexi over, and attached heat underneath which will be regulated.

Guy also didn't seal the inside of the cage. He used flex seal and sprayed the bottom. Not okay.

Went out and lined the walls and floor with Lino

As you can see in other pictures, it was a hideous green. Shocking what paint can do:

Finally, mounted drift wood:

All that's left is using aquarium silicone to seal the edges of Lino, adding plants and hooking it all up.

Will continue to update!

I have an opportunity to acquire a Peruvian Long-Tail. It seems to be very curious and non-aggressive but, is still a juvenile and I've heard that can change as they reach sub-adult.

What I cannot seem to find is care sheets specific to Peruvian Long-Tails.
If I get this snake I want to have a habitat set up and dialed in before I take it home.

It is my understanding that this species inhabits a much more temperate climate than most other boas(Temp's down to 55 F).

1/ Is it beneficial to provide a mimicry of the season even if you have no breeding plans?

2/ Would BCC or BCI care sheets otherwise be applicable? Or should it include a lower RH?

It is driving me nuts that so little info on husbandry of Boa constrictor longicauda seems to be available. I would very much like to keep this snake and watch as it grows and changes but, if I cannot be relatively sure that I will be providing husbandry that ensures it stays health and has it's needs met I will have to pass.

I'm trying to find a bedding that I'm happy with for my sand boas. I'm using coco fiber right now, but the longer fibers have been causing teenie tiny problems. Nothing huge, just very mildly irritating and more of an inconvenience, not a danger or anything. It's a little harder to clean because of the difference in size and shape of the fine pieces and the stringy pieces too.

I'm just wondering about using vermiculite as bedding? Pure curiosity with no real thought put into it at all as of now. Any thoughts? I worry about them ingesting it, I already feed outside of the cage, but what if they did ingest some?

Or what about sanichips?

Previously they were kept on walnut bedding, and sand (from different sources) but I don't much like sand and always hear mixed things about it, and the walnut bedding was stuck in one of the snake's eyes when I got her, so I'm not really liking the idea of that much either.

Thanks.

So, I have had 2 cats that do not get along now for a while, about 3 months, one of which was here much longer (since birth) than the other. Tonight, they fought, and he hurt the cat that he doesn't get along with, plus another cat, plus the wife and I....my wifes back was scratched pretty bad, but this was from her holding him and getting scared around the other cat, which normally is separated from one another. So, we decided to take the little guy to the animal shelter tonight, as it was just too stressful on not only us, but the rest of our animals as well. I feel so bad for the little guy and we are both very relieved but also very upset we had to give him up do to seniority. I just hope they find him a good home, he was a rescue we took to the vet and got him healthy, so he has vet records I could obtain for them if they ask tomorrow.

The point of this thread though, is when I got home tonight and the wife left for work, I went and held my 3 smaller boas, and it just felt as if nothing else mattered at that point in time, almost therapeutic like. Just gazing into their patterns and looking at all the color they hold is mesmerizing and just relaxing. Has anyone else had this experience before?

I'm getting ready to move my boa from a 41qt tub to a PVC/boaphile style enclosure. Not sure of the actual brand as it was a craigslist find. It came with a RHP that works. My question is this: where do I put the thermostat probe? I thought about on the floor of the enclosure under the RHP, but if my snake lays ontop of it, then it will throw incorrect readings. I also thought about attaching it to the RHP, but am not sure about that either. My concern is that she'll pile herself up between the floor and the RHP and be able to stay in constant contact with the RHP and burn herself. Unregulated, the RHP reaches about 140° and I don't want her to burn herself. I'm also really uncomfortable with the idea of running it unregulated. I don't need it to raise ambient temps, just to provide her a hot spot/basking area. I know quite a few people use these setups, so how do you do it? Thanks!!
I mainly keep ball pythons but yester day I bought my first little boa male, Ive been wanting one for a long time now haha.
Hes born 2012 and is about 80cm.
The guy that sold me the boa told me its a sunset but I really dont think so. He looks nothing like the sunsets Ive ever seen in pictures.
I know he is a hog cross but do you guys think he is an existing morph so to speak? Is there a way to visually se whats in him? Non the less he is really well tempered, curious and ate right away.
